Stranded by The Builders…………………

I’m having major work done on my house, The Husband and I thought it was a good idea to buy a bungalow much too small for our family and then spend 3 months in chaos doing it up!

It will be amazing when it’s finished (I hope) with a side extension housing the master bedroom, with en-suite wet room and the family bathroom. The kitchen is also being knocked through to the existing bathroom giving us a kitchen diner with bi-fold doors opening out to the garden. You can find me, most days, pouring through home improvement magazines choosing all sorts of loveliness I can’t afford! The Husband is also getting carried away, dreaming about dimmer switches in the bedroom and pull down ladders for his brand new loft space!

How is all of this affecting my MS though? I’ve turned into a semi reclusive, house bound shrew! Plotted up on the sofa with my magazines, barking orders at the children and imagining what the builder are getting up to outside. One of the reasons we fell in love with the house is the parking as it has 2 driveways which is such a luxury after living at the end of a cul-de-sac and fighting the neighbours for a space every day. I used to pray to the God of parking as I turned the corner into my road, wondering how I was going to get myself and both kids safely out of the car and into the house. In the new house, before the work started, I could park right outside my front door, within staggering distance of the toilet (always a bonus) but this space is currently filled up with scaffolding, uneven ground and piles of bricks and equipment. Whenever I need to go out The Husband has to get my car and park it carefully in next doors drive so I can hobble out to freedom!  All this is done in front of the builders who are always very helpful, opening doors and helping me to the car but I can’t help feel humiliation! I imagine what they say when I drive off…. “isn’t she brave” “poor cow” etc, etc, etc.

I also need to make sure I’m up and dressed by 7.30 as they descend on us around then. This is not always easy as fellow MSers will know! Self-respect doesn’t allow me to sit in my jim-jams till 10.00 while there are 4 or 5 builders milling about! This has helped with discipline though and when I have my wet room all this will be easy peasy!

Luckily The Husband doesn’t work very often so is around to help but this week my boy goes back to school so we need to get organised. The builders are kicking us out in a couple of weeks while they smash up the interior, knocking the kitchen into the bathroom. Luckily my Mum is putting us up for that time so hopefully I’ll return to the house and it will all be finished!!!!!!

  1. Well, you’re doing better than me, Abi! When we had building work done earlier in the year, I resorted to letting the builders let themselves while I was still asleep! No self respect! It’s going to be so lovely when it’s all finished!
